LEGAL ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE
BCLS can provide free 30 minute legal consultations. These are by appointment only.
We also provide information, advice and assistance to all clients in areas of law that:
help manage or resolve financial stress;
assert individual rights;
protect against, inform and educate against family and domestic violence and abuse,
We educate and guide those clients skilled enough to self represent, but also identify and provide representative help for those clients who are unable to advocate for themselves.
The value of a general community legal service like BCLS is that each client can address any number of legal matters in the one trusted environment.
A large portion of our clients when they contact BCLS are experiencing immediate financial hardship and/or violence and abuse, so we tailor our services accordingly, and we give priority to our most vulnerable clients.
Our practice areas of law are:
Domestic and family violence
Tenancy and housing
Motor vehicle accidents – property damage
Consumer and debt problems
We are unable to provide advice and assistance in the following areas of law:
Drafting Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney
Personal injury claims
The BCLS Mediation service helps people solve disputes quickly and with as little formality and technicality as possible. All mediations are conducted on a confidential basis.
BCLS offers a facilitated co-meditation style of dispute resolution service. It sounds complicated but what it really means is that each mediation convened has two mediators appointed; one mediator for each party. Both mediators work together to help each party reach a solution to their legal problem.
Whether parties attend on their own accord or by order of the Court, the mediator can assist the parties to work towards achieving an outcome agreeable to all parties.
The BCLS Mediation service is available to assist clients in:
Family law matters, such as divorce, property settlement, parenting plans; and
Civil matters, such as neighbourhood disputes, consumer complaints and debt.
We cannot assist in mediation where there has been a history of domestic violence.
